Isn't this the cutest thing you have ever seen? Well, at least this is what I thought, when I found this picture (The Frugal Navy Wife). Danielle shows so many awesome self-made costumes for little kids that she actually inspired me to make my daughters' Halloween costume myself. I just figured since she loves fairies I will make her a Garden Fairy costume for this Halloween.
First, I needed a tutu. But I wanted one that is unique and where I don't have to pay $20-$30 for it. So I looked around and there was no way else then doing it myself.
I knew I did not wanted to sew one, which would have been impossible since I had no sewing machine at the time.
But there is a way to make a tutu without sewing at all.
Here is comes:
I went to Hobby Lobby and bought approximately 5 yards of tulle. They sell it on rolls already so you don't have to worry about cutting the width. I took 3 different colors, even tulle with glitter ( but remember if you buy glitter tulle, that you work with it somewhere where you can clean up the floors and tables easily since the glitter like to spread all over the place). You will need ribbons as well and for my project I bought little glittery paper flowers ( in the scrap book section). And other accessories that I will show you later.
First step, measure you child's waist by putting the ribbon around the waist and making a knot on each side. I wrapped my tulle around a cookie sheet and cut it on one side to get strips at the same length.
Step 2: Once you have all your tulle strips cut. Take the ribbon and put it on your leg. Put the tulle strip underneath the ribbon.
Step 3: Put your hand through the loop at the top and reach for the ends on the other side and pull it through the loop
Step 4: After you pulled the tulle through the ribbon, make sure that you have the strip right next to the first knot that you made and pull firmly until you have the knot shown in the last picture.
And now! Do this over and over and over again until you reach it other knot.
If you want to apply some flowers on the tulle, put the tutu on a hanger and hang it up this is much easier than laying it on a table. And then take your fabric glue and start gluing, there is no need to hold it or squeeze it hard.
AND VOILA', the tutu is finished!
I also bought a headband, a flower clip. Wings and Warrant ( Dollar Store for example) and some glittery make up.
And all you have to put on is a matching shirt and leggings, you could even clip some flowers on her shoes and of you go. Here are some picture from the accessories. I did not spend more then $12 for all of it and I think that is a great deal for a Halloween Costume that she can wear any time later as a dress up costume.
HAVE FUN CREATING!
